Treasures-Exhibition of Selected Cultural Relics Unearthed from King Lu's Mausoleum in Ming Dynasty

Zhu Tan (1370--1389AD),who was the tenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang (1328--1398AD),the founder of the Ming dynasty, lived in Shandong Province. He was born in 1370 (Third year of the Hongwu reign),and received the title of Prince of Lu at two months old of age. He went to live in his princedom in Yanzhou at the age of fifteen. As a result, Yanzhou was elevated from zhou (sub-prefecture) to fu (prefecture), administering four sub-prefectures and twenty-three counties. Zhu Tan was well-educated was courteous to scholars. He died of elixir overdose at the age of 19 and received the posthumous name “Huang”. His mausoleum was located at the southern foothill of the Jiulong Mountain, which locates between Zoucheng City and Qufu City. From 1970 to 1971,the rescue excavation led by Shandong Provincial Museum unearthed a large quantity of valuable cultural relics, such as crowns and costumes, miniature furniture and lacquer wear, scholar objects, zither-chess-calligraphy-painting, and wooden figurines procession of the prince’s honor guard. These artifacts not only provide a valuable source of physical material for studying the political, economic and cultural situation of the early Ming dynasty, but also embody the superb craftsmanship of that period.
